Unlikely Friends

What does unlikely friends mean? Why did I even come up with that? Did I judge at first and something proved me wrong? I googled this and was faced with pictures of animal friends – cat with a mouse, dog with a deer! Then I found a documentary on ‘unlikely friends forgive’ about victims becoming friends with their perpetrators! This wasn’t exactly the path I was going down. Maybe a change of title is needed here? Maybe ‘Affinity Friends’.

My unlikely friend is ‘insert name here’…and by all conversations we both have led very different lives and walked very different paths. Yet I enjoy her company immensely. Why wouldn’t I? I am drawn to her. There is an excitement at the thought of going to work when I know she will be there. What draws us to certain people and repel us from others?

Affinity (noun) 1. a natural liking for and understanding of someone or something. 2. The degree to which a substance tends to combine with another.

“AFFINITY” is the mind’s law of attraction, and that we gravitate to where we belong is a truth recognised by proverbs of every country. “Like attracts like,” “birds of a feather flock together,” “water finds its own level”, “show me your company and I’ll tell you what you are,” all have reference to this universal law, for the mind is a magnet and draws to itself all things of like nature. We cannot attract that for which we have no inner response, no more than the needle of the compass can point in any direction except North.

If I attract an undesirable person or uncongenial conditions to me then I should give myself a careful analysis and find out why I attracted them. Often the cause will not be visible on the surface; its manifestation may greatly surprise me; but somewhere in the subconscious mind the seed was sown and this must be uprooted before any outer change can occur. Changing positions, localities and environments accomplished naught so long as inner response remains the same.

“For the thing which I greatly feared has come upon me”, lamented Job. Of course it did. Nothing in the universe could have prevented it, for through the immutable law of attraction we draw to ourselves whatever we have been thinking. All thoughts eventually assume objective form and we then are surrounded by our mental creations. We can attract friends, health, wealth, success, happiness; or we can draw to us their opposites. One often hears persons say, when speaking of unfortunate events, “I knew that was going to happen,” or “I expected to have bad luck.” Their expectant attitude coupled with fear attracted and later materialised the conditions.

Affinity is the cohesive force of all associations, and on the mental plane draws together people with similar ideas, ideals, interests and ambitions. Professional, artistic, literary, musical and scientific people have their clubs and organisations. “Like attracts like” is the law throughout every sphere of life. Honest men are not attracted to dishonest; educated men to uneducated; clean men to unclean, nor pure minds to impure.

Thank you “insert name here” because I admire everything you are and everything you stand for and I’m proud to call you my friend! And in saying that…I’m proud of me for standing for what I believe in and ultimately attracting you into my life x
